Steel & Aluminum

Steel & Aluminum logistics, port to final destination.

The short version

Mercer stages imported steel and aluminum inputs through the Pacific Northwest gateway, holding tariff-exposed metal in Class 3 bonded storage between receipt and production. Duty is deferred until the material is withdrawn for U.S. consumption.

The challenge

Why it’s hard.

Steel and aluminum carry some of the heaviest tariff exposure of any imported input, and they often sit between arrival and a production run. Paying duty the moment metal lands ties up capital long before it earns anything.

Port to door

How Mercer handles it.

01

Arrive & clear

Metal arrives at Seattle or Tacoma; we handle drayage and any CBP exam on-site.

02

Hold in bond

Stage tariff-exposed inputs in Class 3 bond — duty deferred until you draw the material.

03

Release to production

Withdraw against the production schedule and deliver regionally.

Why it matters

What you get.

Put the whole flow with one accountable partner — from the terminal to the final mile — and reclaim the time and capital lost to coordinating separate vendors.

The advantage

  • Defer duty on Section 232-exposed metal until withdrawal
  • Stage inputs between receipt and production
  • Buffer rate volatility without paying duty up front
Questions, answered

Frequently asked.

Can I stage tariff-exposed steel in bond?

Yes. Class 3 bonded storage holds imported steel and aluminum in-bond for up to five years, with duty deferred until the material is withdrawn for U.S. consumption.

When is duty paid on bonded metal?

Duty is assessed only when the material is withdrawn for U.S. consumption; metal re-exported in the same condition may never incur U.S. duty.
